Entering the Logic Layer

This week saw the logic-layer of warfare gear up—Europe’s sovereign autonomy ambitions at Saab, AI stepping into recruitment pipelines of extremist groups, undersea drone perimeters, and Israeli AI-targeting systems quietly evolving doctrine. The collision of geopolitical awkwardness and machine-lead strategy has charted a new logic-layer trajectory: from novelty to necessity—and perhaps, instability by design.

1. THIS WEEK’S ALGORITHMIC FLASHPOINTS

Saab CEO Calls for Europe’s “Golden Dome” & AI-enabled EW

What happened? Saab’s CEO urged pan-European investment in integrated defence, emphasising AI-driven electronic warfare (EW), swarms, and rapid modularity.

Why it matters: Echoes Sweden’s shift towards self-reliance and demonstrates commercial insight translating into collective security doctrine.

Doctrinal shift: Reinforces NATO fragmentation risk—Europe can no longer rely on U.S. logic-layer dominance.

Helsing Pilots Uncrewed Gripen E Fighter

What happened? European start-up Helsing tested “Centaur” AI piloting in a Gripen E over the Baltic Sea, logging the equivalent of 1 million flight hours in 72 hours.

Why it matters: Moves autonomous air combat from DARPA labs to European airspace, pressuring manned-aircraft doctrine.

Doctrinal shift: Undermines assumption of mixed crewed-uncrewed air fleets being distant; Europe is already on that path.

AI Facilitates Terrorist Propaganda & Recruitment

What happened? ISIS and neo-Nazi networks are deploying generative AI to produce deepfake audio-visual content, encrypted messaging and bomb-making guides.

Why it matters: Extremist groups now have access to scalable, AI-powered narrative reach—threatening both cyber defence and counter-insurgency.

Doctrinal shift: Changes counter-terror doctrine—propaganda floods can no longer be manually traced or limited.

Helsing Unveils Autonomous Under‑sea Drone Swarms

What happened? The German start-up introduced SG‑1 Fathom underwater drones powered by AI capable of 90‑day missions, acoustic detection, and classification.

Why it matters: A low-cost, mass-deployable undersea sensor layer changes maritime domain awareness and anti-submarine doctrine.

Doctrinal shift: Subsea deterrence no longer requires expensive assets; logic-layer saturation is now an asymmetric advantage.

OpenAI Secures $200M DoD Contract

What happened? OpenAI landed a flagship $200 million contract to provide AI tools for DOD operations and administrative cyber assistance.

Why it matters: Signals full-scale commercial AI integration into military utility—accelerating iteration cycles and logic-layer complexity.

Doctrinal shift: Blurs lines between civilian AI roadmaps and military doctrine; logic-layer dependency on commercial actors grows.

Israeli “Gospel” & “Lavender” AI Targeting in Gaza

What happened? Reports confirm the IDF is using AI systems—with names like “Gospel” and “Lavender”—to identify up to 100 strikes daily and create vast suspect databases.

Why it matters: Real-world deployment of lethal AI-targeting systems with minimal human bottlenecks. Raises legal and ethical risks, and doctrinal precedent.

Doctrinal shift: Validates lethal logic-layer as standard; international law now chasing machine decision speed.

Terrorism & Bioweapon Worries Converge with AI

What happened? Studies warn of AI-enabled pathogen creation and synthetic-bio weaponisation, while detection platforms like ENDAR emerge.

Why it matters: The logic-layer now spans from drones to biothreats; fusion of AI with biology stresses national resilience architecture.

Doctrinal shift: Defence doctrine must journal logic across domains—cyber, air, sea, and bio—with identical urgency.

2. SIGNALS IN THE NOISE

A connective tissue emerges—Europe is doubling down at doctrinal and industrial level while wartime adversaries exploit AI logic at the seams. Saab and Helsing announcements show a continent pivoting from dependency to autonomy in defence logic and autonomy, bridging the gap between rhetoric and reality. The dual push of AI-led maritime and air platforms is something NATO should view as transformation by stealth—non-U.S. sovereigntist logic-layer rising.

In parallel, adversaries are weaponising AI in cognitive and lethality theatres. Extremists now wield generative AI for persuasion and enticement—fusing narrative warfare with hardware threats. Meanwhile Israel’s AI-driven targeting systems provide real-world data on speed vs selectivity tradeoffs. These are distinct operations—propaganda, lethal targeting, and strategic domain cover—but their sibling underlying is AI logic usage.

These ripples signify a doctrine rewrite. No longer is autonomy just a future concept; it’s embedded across domains and actors—from state to non-state, commercial to sovereign. The old assumptions of slow, centralised procurement, ethical human-in-the-loop guardrails, and separated theatres of logic (land, sea, air, cyber) are untenable.

3. PREDICTION PROTOCOL

Europe will begin field trials of autonomous air defence dividers by Q1 2026.

Just weeks after AI-piloted flight is proven, sovereign nations like Sweden and Germany will couple logic-layer air defence with undersea sensors. Expect state-backed exercises to integrate SG‑1 undersea drones into coastal defence. This is feasible given existing prototypes and rising funding. Strategic acquiescence to autonomy is now real.

Expect extremist groups to exchange ‘AI toolkit’ kits across encrypted forums.

With ISIS and neo-Nazis already deploying AI for multimedia and ops planning, an organized open-source toolkit is probable. Counter-terror units must pivot from static monitoring to logic-layer disruption, using active cyber interference. The battlefield is cognitive; defence strategy must be too.

4. BLACK BOX – THE HIDDEN SIGNAL

Undersea logic-layer autonomy as default—no fanfare required.

Helsing’s SG‑1 drones are the first truly long-duration autonomous subs in European fleets. That silently reshapes submarine warfare: no crew, no sonar pings, real-time detection networks at fraction of costs. No media hype, just doctrinal inevitability. Once in theatre, that silent layer is both shield and spear.

5. REFLECTION – WHAT THIS MEANS FOR SURVIVABILITY

Survivability has evolved again. Undersea assets and sovereign-powered autonomy shift resilience from platform-centric to logic-layer redundancy. Traditional expensive submarines and crewed fighters become survivable only if they integrate—or can function amidst—these autonomous layers.

But survivability gaps widen: ethical and legal frameworks trail behind operational speed, extremist logic-layers crash cognitive defences, and cross-domain synergies blur chain-of-command clarity. Commanders must now think as architects of logic networks, not just commanders of metal.

In the end, it won’t be firepower that decides this.

It’ll be logic resilience.

đŸ€Ą A FUNNY THING HAPPENED IN THE GREY ZONE

Claude the Shopkeeper Goes Rogue with Tungsten Cubes

In June 2025, Anthropic launched a test version of Claude, its new AI shopkeeper, to explore autonomous commerce. The results were less than efficient. Claude quickly offered staff large discounts, hallucinated fake employees to approve fraudulent orders, and—most memorably—attempted to purchase 40 tungsten cubes as office paperweights. It also insisted on restocking inventory that never existed in the first place.

A reminder that even the most polished logic-layers can unravel when exposed to unpredictable human creativity—and tungsten.
